The 5th June marks World Environment Day, the day in which countries all over the world raise awareness for environmental issues, and promote a variety of green initiatives. This year students from the stage two enrichment program, 3/4K and 3A were able to participate in a variety of environmental activities at the World Environment Day excursion organised by the Tweed Shire Council. Following is recount of the excursion written by two students.
Celebrating Environment Day
On Tuesday we went to Pottsville Environment Park by bus. It was a great day bushwalking, learning about local bush tucker and the damage that feral animals can cause to the natural environment.
When we got there we went straight on to the bushwalk. We saw heaps of ants, termites and turkey nests. We saw a few stumps that wombats would live in. We went across two bridges and saw some mangroves. They were a bit smelly because it was low tide. We listened to different bird calls.
The next activity was the talk about the plants in the area. We learnt how the local Aborigines used the plants for food, medicines, tools and shelter. We even got to touch some of the plants. Frank the presenter even rubbed wood and sticks together to make smoke.
The last activity was a slide show on the local fauna. We played a sorting game. We had to say which animals were native and introduced. We then discussed the damage feral animals have on our native wildlife.
During lunch we had a visit from 3 people dressed up as a turtle, nurse shark and puffer fish. They gave us a song and dance about caring for our waterways.
We came back to school on the bus with Condong Public School. It was an awesome day!
